Trek! A History in Mountain biking 1975 to 2010
Trek OCLV came to be during the early 1990s. Bob Read the director of Trek had attended an Aerospace exhibit and decided that Carbon frame moulds was the long run. Using the correct moulds and Carbon he would manage to build a frame which was not simply light but stiff and strong too.
In 1992 the first Carbon Trek frame was made. OCLV stands for “Optimum Compaction, Low Void” and refers to Trek’s proprietary process for creating carbon structures that exceed aerospace standards. At this time Trek had produced the World’s lightest production road frame. It weighed 2.44lbs Trek also announced the T3C suspension system. Quite simply meaning that the bike’s travel was 3 times the shock compression. After the success of the carbon road frames the carbon mountain bike frame was soon to follow. In 1993 the first OCLV mountain bike was introduced. This was the 9900. Again, this was the world’s lightest production mountain bike frame weighing in at on 2.84lbs.
The carbon frame is actually a common sight but it’s amazing to reflect the fact that weights our company is still seeing even today were almost achieved by Trek during the early 1990s. The 2.44lbs on a road frame continues to be an extremely respectable weight for a road frame and therefore the mountain bike frame is lighter than the the vast majority which happens to be out today.
Along with their lifetime warranty, a carbon Trek bike is one of the safest, expensive purchases you will make in biking. The lifetime warranty on both road and mountain bike is valid for the first owner for as long as they own the bike or frame. Even with this offer is a rare occurrence to hear or read of a frame failing due to manufacturers defects.
In case you crash and break your frame a selection of a heavily reduced replacement under their “Crash Replacement Scheme” is obtainable. This offers the confidence to ride hard and push you to ultimately the limit on every ride if you wish or maybe gives you the confidence in purchasing a costly but great value product.
